Miles to go: 1211
Ok… Not really, but still. I fully intended to run only 6 or 7 miles this morning. The group was supposed to go out and back on the trail this morning for a 10 miler. I figured I would just turn early… But we took about two steps on the trail and discovered that instead of the rain yesterday washing the trail clear, it had melted most of it, but had re-frozen overnight to the consistency of a hockey rink. No Way…
Our fearless leader had taken this into consideration and said she had an alternate, all road route that should be pretty clean (this is where the “gonna kill ’em” comes in). We took off at a very easy pace, which I was thrilled with since I have only run 2 miles in the last 2 weeks. What I failed to make clear was my intention to run SHORT today.
We wound through neighborhoods for quite some time. I settled in and started analyzing my new running pants (Under Armor), which are VERY comfortable. I cursed my shoelaces for coming un-(double)knotted 3 times. I noted the wind was picking up and it was getting colder. I chit chatted.
Then we made a turn on the route that I knew lead to WAY farther than I wanted to go but I was at the point of no return and there was no easy cut back to get home… crap…
My easy pace slowed to a crawl. I bonked about mile 9 on one of the many hills on this course and just had to survive my way in. I’m guessing my last three miles were over 10 minute pace. I just had nothing left. Yes, I have been swimming and bicycling, but my running legs were nowhere to be found. Ugh. It was an odd sensation, too. It was my thighs that were weak. This is not a muscle group that usually craps out on me. My calves are usually the leg parts that die first.
Anyway, 11 miles is 11 miles so I guess I’m cool with it. I just wish I had been paying more attention. I really didn’t want to run that far. I have a feeling I’m going to pay for it tomorrow. Hooray for days off!
