I’m sitting in my truck… It’s 5:30am… It’s dark… And it’s already 83 degrees!!! Which, along with the 214% humidity, made for a lovely, chewy morning… gah!
Ahh well… Such is August in the heart of America…
I am going to be out of the office on Wednesday so I decided to run today to make up for it since I know it will be difficult to find time/places to run on the trip. I’m afraid my schedule for the next month is pretty much hosed so I am going to have to make the best of it and run between the trips. No biggie…
Since I know there is usually an overabundance of critters on this trail (right next to a golf course) I decided to wait until I could actually “SEE” the trail before I took off. No sense getting in a fist fight with a woodchuck before 6am…
I am so used to running with a group now that it seems odd to be up so early and out by myself. That was remedied on my second lap of this particular course as I joined up with a group of Army reservists doing some quick PT before work. Nice guys and gals. A couple of them actually went an extra lap with me, just because. Good for them!
I have to admit, though, that the extreme heat we are experiencing has already got me worried about the 20 miler I’m supposed to run this Saturday. I may have to go out and get one of those headlamps so I can run earlier. Otherwise I am going to be finishing as the temperature tops 90…
…not interested…
I have to say that, all in all, I am kinda disappointed in my shoes. I decided to go with the uberexpensive Asics Gel Kayanos this time. I wanted a higher mileage shoe that would carry me all the way to the marathon. Unfortunately, these shoes are falling apart. Now, granted, I am approaching 400 miles on them and it’s probably time for new ones. But it’s WHERE they are failing that bothers me. The stitching on the inside of the heel cup failed at about 100 miles and the foam on the inside of the heel cup is coming out. Also, the insole is wearing out on the outside of the right shoe and is pilling up under my foot, which causes blisters on longer runs. This, combined with the fact that they were very uncomfortable until I got them broken in, has me thinking that this particular shoe may not be for me. Especially when I look at them compared to my Asics 2120s that are still in good shape after well over 500 miles. Since I will probably need new shoes in a month or so, I may just get another pair of the 2120s. I think they will be good enough now that I have lost weight and they will save me about $50… Kinda disappointing…
